Research positions and roles since 1996

  • Since 2004: Professor of Lifelong Learning in Music for the Prince Claus Conservatoire (Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen).
  • Since 2014: Professor of Lifelong Learning in Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
  • 2014 – 2016: Chair of the working group on Research of the Strategic Partnership ‘New Audiences and Innovative Practice’ (academies of Reykjavik, Groningen, The Hague, Vienna, London Guildhall, Oslo).
  • 2011 - 2014: Chair of the European working group ‘Mobility: Recognition, Monitoring and Joint Degrees’of the project ‘Polifonia’ (European Association of Conservatoires, AEC).
    • 2007-2010: Member of the European working group on ‘Research in Higher Music Education’ of the project ‘Polifonia’ (European Association of Conservatoires, AEC).
    • 2006 - 2009: Leader of the development of an international joint master’s programme “Joint Music Master for New Audiences and Innovative Practice”. Subsidized by the European Socrates /Erasmus programme. Partners: Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen, Royal Conservatoire The Hague, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, Jyväskyla University of Applied Sciences, School of Music and the Reykjavik Academy of Arts, department of Music. In addition seven external partners (2 orchestras, Dutch Broadcast Centre of Music, Leiden University Graduate School, Faculty of Arts; municipality of Isafjördur (Iceland), Globetown Action Zone (London).
    • 2004 - 2007: Co-chair of the European working group on ‘Trends and Changes in the European Music Profession’ of the AEC project ‘Polifonia’. Awarded ‘Success Story’ by European Committee in 2007.
    • 2004 -2005: Chair of the Scientific Committee of EFMET (European Forum of Music Education Training) a co-production of the AEC and the European Music Council.
    • 2002 - 2004: European coordinator of the Project ‘Music Study, Mobility and Accountability’, of the AEC and the NASM (National Association of Schools of Music, USA). Aim: to study transatlantic cooperation in the field of professional music education and quality assurance. Awarded ‘Best Practice’ in 2005 by European Commission.
    • 1999 - 2001: Leader of project ‘Promuse’: a working group on Continuing Professional Development, initiated by the AEC, consisting next to the AEC of the following partners: Association of British Orchestras, London; Centre de Ressources Musique et Danse de la Cité de la Musique, Paris; Sibelius Academy Continuing Education Centre, Helsinki; European Music Office, Brussels; Foundation of Performing Arts, The Hague. Funded by the European Leonardo Programme. Awarded ‘Best Practice’ in 2002 by European Commission.
    • 1996-1999: Coordinator of the 3 year Thematic Network Project on Lifelong Learning, ‘Continuing Professional Development for Musicians’ funded by the European Socrates programme. A project of the AEC.



  • 2009 - 2014: Leading professor of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation ‘Art and Society’ of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen.
  • 1998 - 2004: Director of the North Netherlands Conservatoire. Integral responsibility.
  • 1994 -1998: Director of the Classical Department North Netherlands Conservatoire.
  • 1997 - 2006: Initiator and artistic director of the International Peter the Great Festival (Summerschool and chamber music concert series, initiated between Groningen and St. Petersburg) in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005; 2006. Funded by separate sponsoring.



  • 2011 - 2019: Member of the national advisory committee for Music and Music Theatre of the Prince Bernhard Foundation.

  • 2017: Organiser of the symposium "Meaningful Music in Healthcare" of University Medical Center Groningen and research group Lifelong Learning in Music, in Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen.

  • 2014: Organiser of the symposium “While the Music Lasts – a symposium on Music and Dementia” in De Nieuwe Liefde in Amsterdam.
  • 2014: Organiser of the symposium “10 Years Lifelong Learning in Music” in Prince Claus Conservatoire, Groningen.
  • 2012: Co-organiser of the symposium “While the Music Lasts – a symposium on Music and Dementia” in Wigmore Hall, London, UK.
  • 2007: Initiator and organiser of the seminar “Trends and Changes in the Music Profession; Lifelong Learning & Employability”, Groningen, Prince Claus Conservatoire. A joint seminar of the research group Lifelong Learning in Music and the European Thematic Network Polifonia.
  • 2001: Host and organiser of the Annual Conference in Groningen of the European Association of Conservatoires.

  • Founder of the Dutch Flute Association (1990).

  • 2008: Georg-August-University Göttingen, Germany, PhD in Social Sciences Musicians as Lifelong Learners: Discovery through Biography, summa cum laude.
  • 1988: University of Amsterdam, master’s degree in musicology, specialisation Twentieth Century Music / Theoretical Musicology, with great honour.
  • 1979: North Netherlands Conservatoire, flute, performers and education diploma, cum laude.

  • 2016/17 Winter semester: Visiting professor of Lifelong Learning in Music at the University of the Arts in Graz (Austria).

  • 2015-2018: Advisor of research project ‘Singing away the Blues’ on music and post-natal depression, of the Royal College of Music in London and the Westminster and Chelsea Hospitals.
