Personal profile
Dr. Hugh Jiliang Liu is a senior lecturer, researcher, and coach at Hanze University of Applied Sciences and researcher at the University of Groningen, specialising in organisational psychology, teacher education, talent development, intercultural competence development, and coaching. He helps students and coachees build self-awareness as well as emotional and cultural intelligence, guided by the belief—adapted from Marshall Rosenberg—that “every criticism, judgment, demotivation, and anger is the tragic expression of an unmet need.” This lens anchors Hugh’s need-sensitive, evidence-informed practice: he supports people in recognising the psychological needs, emotions, and values that shape their experiences so that they can respond with empathy, clarity, and initiative. An experienced higher-education lecturer and trained coach and counsellor, Hugh holds a Master’s in talent development & creativity and a PhD in organisational and educational psychology. Committed to lifelong learning, he continually deepens his own self-understanding to be a more compassionate and collaborative colleague, educator, and coach.
