Description

SuDS DNA cities

ClimateScan is an open source interactive web-based map application for international knowledge exchange on 'blue-green' (BGI) / NBS / SUDS projects around the globe. Key objectives include urban resilience, climate proofing and climate adaptation. Between 2014 and 2017 (Boogaard et al 2017), 2000+ climate adaption projects were uploaded with a further 12.000 mapped by professional submissions and ‘citizen science’ projects. The paper describes visualisation and calculation of submitted’ Climate Adaptation DNA’ date to provide basic insights into climate adaptation in the form of structure distribution and water storage potential that will satisfy Municipality and Water Authority basic quantification of these solutions.
To do this the ClimateScan team collected and compared climate adaptation measures across the globe (photos, videos, research papers etc.) in seven subgroups and 20 categories. Size is approximated from polygons drawn in ClimateScan or an average based on system type with a typical depth estimated according to (conservative) guidelines. Initial calculations indicate that storage volume of 25 million+ cubic metres has been implemented in the Netherlands in the last 20 years. Two cities were examined in more detail to illustrate the Climate DNA f cities: Amsterdam an early adapter of BGI in 2002 and Riga, Latvia where BGI implementation began in 2020 for an initial indicator of urban NBS on national levels.
