Description

Bioenergy is emerging as a central pillar of the global shift toward sustainable and low‑carbon energy systems, with recent progress in the field having been driven by advances in feedstock diversification, including forestry and agricultural residues, algae, and industrial by‑products, as well as significant improvements across biochemical, thermochemical, and physicochemical conversion pathways. These developments have strengthened the environmental performance, scalability, and overall efficiency of modern bioenergy systems.

At the same time, national research programs and international collaborations are accelerating innovation through work on feedstock logistics, catalytic upgrading, process integration, and system-scale optimization. These coordinated efforts aim to address long‑standing challenges in feedstock variability, economic feasibility, and reliable biorefinery operation. Parallel industrial advancements, including new biomass-to-gasoline engineering validations, expanded biomethane production, and the deployment of bioenergy solutions across electricity, transport, and maritime sectors, underscore the increasing commercial readiness of advanced bioenergy technologies.

The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight recent breakthroughs, emerging research directions, and practical implementations that are shaping the next generation of bioenergy systems. We invite contributions covering novel feedstocks, innovative conversion technologies, integrated biorefinery concepts, biogas and biomethane applications, advanced biofuels, catalytic and material advances, sustainability and lifecycle assessments, and policy frameworks supporting large‑scale deployment. By bringing together work from academia, industry, and research organizations, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive and forward‑looking perspective on how bioenergy can contribute to global decarbonization goals and a resilient clean‑energy future.
