Abstract

Detection of psychosocial problems among adolescents is one of the main tasks of youth mental health care. For that purpose the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) is often used. This questionnaire is relatively short and contains questions about strengths as well as deficits. Information about the SDQ's validity among Dutch adolescents is sparse and for adolescents over 14 year old no information is available yet. In our research project we study the extent to which the SDQ is useful for screening for psychosocial problems among 12 to 17 year old Dutch adolescents and whether or not the questionnaire is useful for these purposes among adolescents with less than optimal language proficiency.
