Professor of Art & Sustainability at the Art & Society Research Centre of Minerva Academie, Hanze University of the Applied Sciences, Groningen (NL) since 05/2025, Dr Wendy Gers is an art historian, researcher, curator and consultant. With a deep commitment to social and environmental justice, Gers’ research interests include sustainability, decolonization and curatorial studies.
Among other institutions, Gers has previously taught at the Kings College London (UK), University of Groningen, the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art in Limoges and École Supérieure d'Art et du Design, Valenciennes (FR). She has presented guest lectures and keynote addresses in almost 30 nations.
Gers’ independent curatorial projects include two major biennales in East Asia (CN, TW) and exhibitions in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Significant recent curatorial outputs include the Sustainable Ceramics series (2023,2025,2027), and Bouke de Vries: Unbroken (2025-2026) at Princessehof National Ceramics Museum, Leeuwarden (NL).
Gers received her PhD from the University of Sunderland (UK), and her M.A. in Art History (cum laude) from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (ZA). She undertook a Dost-Doctoral Fellowship at Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa (ZA).
