Personal profile
Hugh Jiliang Liu works as a senior lecturer, researcher, and coach at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen. With a deep passion for both teaching and coaching, Hugh is driven by a commitment to cultivating self-awareness and emotional & cultural intelligence in his students and coachees. He believes in the words, “Every criticism, judgment, demotivation, and anger is the tragic expression of an unmet need”, adapted from Marshall Rosenberg’s philosophy. This perspective lies at the heart of Hugh’s educational and coaching practice. He focuses on nurturing his students’ and coachees’ inner peace by guiding them to recognise the underlying psychological needs, emotions, and values that shape their experiences and interactions. He believes that developing this awareness enables individuals to respond with empathy, clarity, and initiative, rather than with defensiveness. At work, Hugh also continuously deepens his own self-understanding, striving to become a more compassionate and collaborative person.
