Description

Based on the last book in the Ebifananyi series, about the oldest known photograph of a Kabaka (King) of Buganda and the installation ‘My guide Through Africa‘ I was invited to do a workshop about artistic research at the Institute for Performative Arts in Maastricht.

The first year students of the Master in Theatre programme. I invited the students to become part of the still ongoing research on the photograph British American explorer Henry Morton Stanley made of the Kabaka in 1875. To prepare for the workshop the students reflected on the situation around the moment of the exposure of the light sensitive glass plate. The first part of the workshop consisted of a presentation of the research up to then. After a break the group started to respond to, and eventually to interact with some of the historical pictures I brought with me. Soon magic started to happen. The documentation that was made will eventually lead to a film work. The following slide show consists of a combination of collages (made by Michaël Bloos in respons as preparation for the workshop), photographs made by me, and still of the film in progress.

With contributions by (thank you for so generously participating!): Abel Enklaar, Bert Serneels, Evelien Cammaert, Marjolein van der Meer, Michaël Bloos, Mirjam Veldhuijzen van Zanten, Myrthe van der Mark, Rik Luijmes, Ruud Horrichs and Silvana Mammone.
