Description
We organized a roundtable discussion on Regulatory Sandboxes: The roundtable discussions on the 'Regulatory Sandbox' (RS) highlighted that the concept of a sandbox is still new to many of the stakeholders present, including lawyers, AI developers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. The discussions focused on potential regulatory barriers that could delay the implementation of AI, particularly due to the fragmented and slow-moving legal landscape, which varies across countries and can hinder collaboration and data sharing. Participants saw potential in the RS as an experimental "playground" where the safety and effectiveness of AI can be tested in short, iterative cycles while identifying gaps and obstacles in current legislation. Despite discomfort with certain risks of AI, participants viewed the RS as a controlled and suitable environment to "take risks," which could ultimately benefit patients as well. However, realizing the potential of the RS requires aligning regulatory frameworks (such as the AI Act) with healthcare standards, more structured public engagement, and stronger political and financial support, leading to a more unified approach to AI in healthcare.
