Optical fiber sensors present numerous advantages over electronic counterparts, such as electromagnetic immunity, bio-compatibility, and chemical stability. Beyond these advantages, polymer optical fiber (POF) can be increasingly attractive due to its low cost, large core size, high flexibility, and ease of handling. Due to these characteristics, it has been chosen as the basis for several different sensors, including liquid level, pressure measurement, and health monitoring. POF sensors based on light intensity modulation are particularly suitable for large-scale production due to their low cost. However, high accuracy and precision often require optimizing the sensing structure. To achieve the above-mentioned features, other works have suggested structural modifications, such as introducing micro-bending via a fiberglass mesh covering the fiber structure, or by cutting the fiber cladding and part of the core to increase light leakage. Drawing inspiration from those techniques, in which fiber modification directly influences light loss under external pressure, our approach utilizes a modular mechanical component that can be coupled to the fiber etched section in order to enhance sensors' accuracy and precision, while also allowing modification of the measurement range. This coupled mechanism is engineered to translate external forces into maximized and repeatable variations in the light intensity propagating through the fiber, which isachieved by applying controlled bending to the fiber's etched section. Initial experimental results demonstrate promising outcomes in both sensor accuracy and precision. This technique combines the inherent advantages of POFs—simple, robust, and inexpensive—while mitigating measurement errors associated with fiber positioning and physical interaction with the environment. The methodology offers a means to develop more accurate and precise sensors, suitable for industrial control processes and non-invasive healthcare monitoring.
